Features of Our School-based Curriculum

1.   Learner in the Driver's Seat

E-Learning

BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) Programme is implemented in Primary 3-6 levels.

Different e-learning platforms and tools are used in lessons to enrich students’ learning.

Our students installed different e-books and learning apps in their devices. Learning becomes more convenient and students get to enjoy the flexibility and autonomy to explore the subject-related knowledge on their own. Teachers can also assess students’ learning progress easily by the data collected in the learning platforms.

Besides, e-learning promotes collaborative learning among peers as well. Students can share their works, post comments and evaluate their peers’ works on online platforms. In the whole process, students are in the driver’s seat. They shoulder more responsibility and take charge of their own learning.

To help students build essential skills in media literacy and e-Safety, our school has designed a school-based information literacy program for Primary 1 to 6. Through engaging, age-appropriate lessons, we guide students to become responsible and ethical digital citizens, fully prepared to navigate the complexities of the modern digital world with confidence.

2. NET Programmes

All Aboard the TRAIN to English Excellence!

At Sham Tseng Catholic Primary School, we are dedicated to nurturing confident and capable English learners. Our signature TRAIN programme—representing Think Aloud, Reflection, Active Learning, Interaction, and Nurture—adopts a holistic approach to language acquisition. Guided by our native English teacher (NET), Miss Gina, the programme seamlessly integrates the four key language skills, with a specialized focus on building strong foundations in reading and writing from an early age.

Early Literacy & Speaking

We place a heavy emphasis on early literacy development while actively incorporating dynamic speaking elements to build communication confidence in our younger learners.

Home Reading Journal

Students develop lifelong reading habits through our custom-designed Home Reading Journal, bridging classroom learning with home practice.

Personalized Learning Path

Using the PM Benchmark levelling system to cater to diverse learning needs, Miss Gina assigns tailored books on Raz-Plus that match each student's unique reading ability.

Unlocking English Through Mystery & Inquiry

Step into a world of intrigue and discovery! Our innovative Reading and Speaking Program brings classical literature to life, utilizing specially adapted readers based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous Sherlock Holmes series, including The Sign of Four and A Study in Scarlet. Under the expert guidance of our Native English Teacher (NET), Mr. Zack, students step out of traditional textbooks and into the shoes of investigators. This immersive approach transforms English language learning into a thrilling journey of critical thinking and deductive reasoning.

Creative Expression

To showcase their comprehension and creativity, students complete hands-on, imaginative tasks such as drafting their own professional crime scene reports.

Empowering Future Leaders Through Project-Based Learning (PBL)

At our school, learning goes far beyond the pages of a textbook. Our innovative Project-Based Learning (PBL) Curriculum is designed to cultivate essential 21st-century skills—including public speaking, critical thinking, and collaborative teamwork—by engaging students in real-world problem-solving. Under the guidance of our Native English Teacher (NET), Mr. Zack, students collaborate on meaningful investigations that give language learning a real purpose. By researching and presenting their findings in English, students shift their perspective of the language from a challenging academic subject to a practical, powerful tool for global communication.

Public Speaking

Students build immense confidence by regularly presenting their project findings and solutions to their peers and teachers.

Inquiry-Based Mindset

By exploring topics hands-on, we ignite students' natural curiosity, turning them into self-motivated lifelong learners.

3. Social Emotional Learning

Nurturing Hearts and Minds: Our SEL Programme

In Hong Kong's exam-oriented environment, our school provides a vital "breathing space" by integrating Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) directly into the primary English curriculum. Using relatable stories as a learning bridge, this innovative programme teaches children not just to read, but to read to learn, think, reflect, and manage their emotions.

By exploring these characters' feelings and coping mechanisms, students learn to evaluate their own emotions and understand the impact of their actions on others, fostering empathy and resilience both in and out of the classroom.

4. School-based Writing Curriculum

 Navigating Our Writing Journey

Our school-based writing curriculum is strategically designed to develop strong written communication by aligning seamlessly with student textbook themes and the EDB's Learning Progression Framework. To reinforce learning and skill acquisition, we utilize memorable, level-specific writing acronyms: C.U.P.S. for junior students, S.A.L.T. for the middle years, and S.H.A.M.P.O.O. for senior students. This structured path progressively builds their capabilities from foundational mechanics to sophisticated literary techniques.

5. Organized Learning and Teaching

*School-based Module Booklets*

Well-planned and well-designed homework can help students consolidate their knowledge, explore different issues and apply what they have learned.

Therefore, we have developed our school-based module booklets based on the context of the chapters. Students learn English language step by step. They first build up their vocabulary, then practise grammar patterns and construct sentences. Detailed notes of grammar items and sentence structures are included for students’ self-study.

Each unit includes an extended reading task and ends with a meaningful writing task. A self-learning task is also incorporated in each unit. Students scan the QR code and complete the task by themselves as a preview. Not only do the above tasks motivate our students to learn independently after class, they also help develop their good learning habits.
